Bermuda/Scooters

Question
I planning to travel multiple times a day during a short trip and hope to rent a scooter. Other the left-side driving, is there anything I should know about scooter rentals and traveling the island on one? People have told me it's dangerous, but I am confident in my abilities and prefer the flexibility of not waiting for a crowded bus.

Honest advice is welcome as I have not yet booked. Wheels Cycles looks like the cheapest rental for a double out there.

Answer
Hi Cat,

My apologies for the delay in this response!!!

Here's my honest answer: I love a scooter! There's no doubt scooters can be dangerous. Cars can be dangerous, too. So can bicycles. And you're so right about flexibility. You can come and go as you please. No waiting.

My scooter rental vendor of choice is Oleander. My husband and I rent a double for 7 days on every visit. Pick up and delivery is no problem.

Now. Having said all of this, you say you're confident in your abilities. Assuming that you know how to operate a scooter - and a double at that - you'll do fine.

Here are some things to be aware of in Bermuda:

- roads are narrow and traffic is heavy
- I can't say this enough: roads ARE NARROW
- roundabouts are common; yield to those already "in the circle" and maintain your speed
- observe the speed limit
- know that younger local scooter drivers tend to dart in and out of traffic at fast speeds, be aware and stay focused
- rentals are pretty self-explanatory - easy to do with maps, helmets, etc.
- when you fill up at a gas station, try to pay the exact amount, otherwise, you may not get change back
- be aware of tourists on scooters who tend to drive too slowly and in the middle of the roadway as opposed to staying close to the shoulder so others can pass
- tourists, too, tend to forget their signal lights are on; can be confusing
- lock your bike ALWAYS
- you might consider putting white duct tape over the rental company's name on your helmet to avoid "looking like a tourist"in less trafficked areas
- scooters are very common as rental cars aren't allowed in Bermuda (not yet anyway)
- in my opinion, if you've operated a scooter in the past, especially a double with two riders, I believe you'll be fine, just be a careful driver!

I hope this helps! And, again, I apologize for the delay in this response to your very good question!
