Bermuda/Bermuda Dress
Expert: Michael - 1/12/2005
QuestionHi Michael,
I am travelling to Bermuda in February. I was wondering what the general dress code of the island is. I know that most restaurants require smart casual, but as far as the rest of the island, doing the touristy thing, are jeans and t-shirts okay? I know it'll be cool there but in general are backless or strapless tops okay? Are Hawaiian/Tropical print shirts okay for smart casual or would a golf/polo shirt be better? I've heard conflicting information on what you can and can't wear and my vacation is coming up quick.
Thank you,
Becca Richardson
AnswerHi Bec,
Generally speaking jeans will work just fine during the day and at any pub. A retaraunt I think would prefer slacks along with eith a polo type or tropical print shirt. That would be near perfect in my book.
Sometimes I go with a suit jacket and collarless shirt.
When they talk real dress code Becca, they are referring to top end places thsat infact require a jacket for gentlemen. Tom Moores Tavern, The Four Ways Inn and a few others.
They really are moving in a direction where people can dress more comfortable but not slobby.
When doing the touristy thing of course jeans and t's are fine. I mean going into the aquarium or Fort St. Catherine, or a museum etc. Even shopping around St. George or in Hamilton. Stopping at the Swizzle or Blackbeards. Perfect!
I would advise against a "t" at a restaurant, and even a pub in the evening. Other than that you're good to go.
Backless and strapless sound good to me. It gives the idea of dressing up to me. Whatever you would wear to a fine restaurant in the states will do in Bermuda. (Yuo certainy wouldn't go to a fine restaurant inthe states in jeans and a tee.
Feel good, and comfortable, about dressing in Bermuda. I like the flowery patterns.
Remember you would only look out of place not dressed to the nine's in a few places.
Feel free to write should you have any further inquiries.
Happy planning!
Michael
