Bermuda/Bermuda excursions

Question
Hello.  My family and I will be taking a seven day cruise to Bermuda in about a month.  We will be stopping in Hamilton and St. George. I  have heard that it saves money to book excursions with a company on the island as opposed to the ship, and also that the excursions are less crowded.  My question is, can you verify that, and how can I get in contact with such companies?  Any additional information would be gratefully received.

Answer
Hello Kylie,

August will be a great time to visit Bermuda.  No question about it.

As to the cost of booking an excursion from the cruiseline versus directly ... well just eliminating the cruise line's profit would save you some money.

When you are in Hamilton Kylie, you will find a Bermuda Information kiosk next to the cruise terminal.  In St. George the information kiosk is in the main square just as you approach Ordinance Island.  Picking up some literature on what you are considering will be readily available.  Calling for a reservation would be easy and access to the departure would be easy in the event it is not local to you.  The bus system is functional and will get you anywhere you want to go.

You didn't mention what type of excursion you may be interested.  A few to consider:  Hawkin's Island Carnival Party, a "Blue Flag" taxi tour, a snorkel cruise, or a personalized island walk geared to what you may like.

All of the above with the exception of the walking tour will also advertise in the complimentary magazine Bermuda Today which is available most anywhere while in Bermuda.

The walking tour is nice.  "Out and about" with Jo Cook.  A kindly English woman would either pick you up or would meet you somewhere to begin the tour.  Jo advertises on www.bermudashorts.bm/outandabout  I think if you google "Jo Cook Bermuda" you would find her website too. The tour would certainly be pleasant and be short money.

The "Blue Flag" taxi tour is perfect for anyone new to Bermuda.  The taxi's that fly a blue flag are licensed and trained for tourists.  You can rent them by the hour or half day or full day.  You can even share the set cost with another couple.  Look around the square or docking terminal and simply wave one down.

Again, you will have no problem booking these tours while in Bermuda.  Jo Cook would pencil you in if you e-mailed her.  A Blue Flag would reserve for you also if you e-mailed.

Happy planning!
Michael
