I am leaving next week for vacation in Bermuda.  This is our first trip.  I have been reading a lot about the dress code.  I think I am familiar with the attire expectations except for the area of shoes.  If my husband wears shorts/pants and and a cotton polo shirt, are athletic shoes appropriate?

Do enjoy your first trip.  It will be one to remember for certain.

Athletic shoes, or sneakers, would be more in line or appropriate with shorts most anywhere, including lunch anywhere or dinner in a pub.  All other activity, including worship services, shorts and athletic shoes are acceptable with tourists.  

However, if I were to wear slacks to a nice establishment for dinner I would go with at least loafers or boat shoes. I am including here moderately priced restaurants. Athletic shoes/sneakers with slacks would stick out at dinner.

The finer restaurants such as Four Ways, Tom Moores ... would require more of a dress up attire.
