Bermuda/Getting Married in Bermuda

Question
Hi Michael,
I live in NY and am planning a wedding in Bermuda - I've never been and was wondering if you might suggest some locations/places to stay.  I believe I will have approximately 50 guests from out of town (some with children).  We're looking for something casual chic if that makes sense.
Thank you.
Rona

Answer
Hi Rona,

Congratulations!  My niece tied the knot in Bermuda a couple of years back at the Wyndham.  It was a beautiful property and ceremony.  There is currently talk that they will be closing to construct condos, if not already have.

As a first timer to Bermuda you will find it a most lovely destination.  Beautiful and romantic.  There is something magical about Bermuda.

Did you know that getting married in Bermuda requires more than just hiring someone to perform the service?  The government has certain things that must first be addressed.  Advisers are available in Bermuda.  Wedding counselors are available.  Do call the Bermuda Department of Tourism (1.800.BERMUDA)for the details of marrying in Bermuda.

Anyhow Rona, to take a stab at your question ...
On the island(s) of Bermuda you will find large hotels, small hotels, cottage colonies and guest apartments +.  The varying categories are determined by quantity of rooms/occupancy potential. You can view a number of them at:  http://www.bermudashorts.bm/accommodations.asp

I have stayed at all the categories of accommodations and have most enjoyed the cottage colony type.  As a rule of thumb I would say that these accommodations are premiere being well situated and costly.  I do not mean to say that large hotels, small hotels or even the smaller guest houses would offer less an experience in Bermuda. That is not so.  Each place will bring its own charm. Before I go on let me suggest that once you select a resort do not second guess you choice. You will be pleased.

I'm not sure if you are seeking a place on the beach, dining on site, figuring on all guests staying at the same place, if cost is a factor etc.  I understand your phrase casual chic.  So let me share a thought or two.

A moderately priced destination is Grotto Bay Beach.  They have a fabulous property, two dining rooms, beach, outdoor pool/bar, onsite millennium old caves, the availability of onsite water sports rentals.  I would recommend this moderately priced resort.  It is on the bus system allowing access to most anywhere a guest would like to adventure.

The Rosedon is listed as a small hotel.  To me it is infact a an A+ B&B.  A four minute stroll to downtown Hamilton's bus depot, main ferry terminal and dozens of restaurants.  You could even have the reception at M.R. Onions which is a restaurant well suited for the occasion.  The Rosedon offers complimentary R.T. taxi to a choice Southshore beach.  They also offer the Bermudian traditional tea-time at 4PM with finger sandwiches.  The grounds are pleasant. Besides the main building, an old Bermudian home, they have two wings to either side of the pool area.  A hot breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast is delivered to your room, patio or to you at the pool.  Very, very nice place.  The cost is less than Grotto Bay.

If finances are not a problem any of the cottage colonies would take you and your guests over the top.  Places like Cambridge Beaches, The Reefs, Pompano Beach Club ...

I will leave you with one final thought.  I once planned group travel for a professional society I belong to.  I considered a wonderful resort of the Cottage Colony class, but it is a premiere timeshare that rents 1 and 2BR cottages.  Three pools, lush property, dining on site, a skip to the village of St. George, and transportation to their beach club and the St. George 18 hole golf club.  The one BR's have a sleep sofa in the living room making occupancy four.  The two bedrooms also have a sleep sofa in the living room making occupancy six.  Full kitchens to keep individual charges down.  For the money the rentals would cost, this place is worth consideration.   The St. George's Club is a beauty.

Happy planning!
Michael
