Beverages/LARGE BENEDICTINE WINE BOTTLE
Expert: Paul Wagner - 11/24/2008
Question
i found a very large green wine bottle.it's about 16in tall & the bottom is 6 1/4 across. the word BENEDICTINE followed bt a cross is embossed on 1 side and a large horse shoe embossed on the other.the opening on top of the bottle is 1 1/2 in across. embossed on the bottom is "MADE IN FRANCE" and what appears to be an x & y merged together followed by either G11 or 611. there is also a hole in the center, with the outside opening being at least 2x bigger than the inside opening. the glass has many imperfections in it including some circular lines arounr the fatest part of the bottle where it slopes up to the neck.(in the pics im sending, for u 2 really get how big the bottle is, i sat a lg drink cup next to it)i saw a picture of one just like it tha was found on a shipwreck that happened in 1884, so it really made me wonder is mine that old or do the still make the wine in bottles like mine? thank u 4 ur time, sonja
AnswerHi Sonja
I am an expert in beverages, not bottles, but I do know that this was the standard Benedictine bottle for many, many years. I don't think that it has any significant collector value.
But don't take my word for--check with the people at antiquebottles.com. They really are experts in the field of bottles, and are very helpful.
Sorry I can't give you more exciting news.
If the bottle were full, I can tell you that it would be quite nice to drink!
