Question
I bought a wine in Germany in 1977 for $100.  I was wondering if it is still ok to drink and what it would be worth today.  The label says Beameister Mosel Bluemchen.  I beleive it is a spatlese. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Joel

I am afraid I don't have great news for you.  This wine was once a nice light fruity white wine, with a nose of pears and apricots and a soft, sweet finish.  But over the years I am sure that it has now aged beyond its prime--tired aromas, drying flavors, and a rather flat and even a bit tart finish.  I wish that I could tell you it has appreciated in value, but my guess is that it would be hard to sell for what you paid for it--particularly because it will be hard to show that you stored it in a perfectly cool dark place for all these years.

My suggestion is that you pick an occasion and open this bottle and taste it with family or friends.  It may still have a bit of charm left, and that would be a real testament to German wines.  But it will probably be quite over the hill--so have a back-up bottle on hand.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news.
