Beverages/Different effects of different alcohols?

Question
Hi Paul
I asked my doctor this question. He said all alcohol is still alcohol so it has the same effect. He is a non drinker however-what does he know?
My friend who used to own a bar said that different types of drinks definately have different effects, and different hangovers. He said beer is the most mellow and tequila makes people (some) energetic and act stupid. Wine makes you happy and talkative but is the worst hangover.
He himself drinks a high quality scotch which makes him relaxed and sleepy.
Your thoughts?

Answer
HI Terry

Your doctor knows more than your bartender!  Alcohol is alcohol, although there are a few factors that influence how quickly and deeply it affects the human body.  Anything carbonated will be absborbed into the bloodsteam quicker.  A full stomach will absorb alcohol more slowly than an empty one.  A thin person will usually see more effect for the same amount of alcohol.  And someone who drinks two  shots straight away will feel the alcohol quicker than someone who sips the same two drinks over an hour or more.

However, you bartender has noticed something else entirely.  People who drink certain drinks are looking for different effects.  When he has a glass of scotch at the end of the day, he is looking to relax, and he does.  Those who drink tequila at a bar are usually looking to get drunk quickly and have a good time.  And they do.  Wine is usually shared over food and over a longer period of time, so you have other factors involved there.

If those people all drink their drinks in exactly the same way, and for exactly the same reasons, they would probably see pretty much the same effects.  But they don't.
