Beverages/Wine?

QuestionPaul
I hope your experiance will be helpfull to me!
I am not a large consumer of alcohol, but I enjoy an occasional beer and mixed drink. Never got into wine.
I am now 55. Over the last years I have noticed certain foods dont agree with me such as fatty meats, dairy and coffee.
Also, all it takes is a couple of beers or two scotches and I get indigestion and bloating.
My doctor gave my liver and other organs a clean bill of health, and stated that its a part of getting older for some people and the obvious lay-off the beer and liquor.
I am not a problem drinker but I do miss having a glass of beer after a hard days work.
One of my co-workers makes his own wine. He says he has never had any health problems.
So-should I or could I switch to wine? I know nothing about wines-where do I start? Is there a wine that is similar to beer (semi serious question).
As for food, any suggestions for meals that are 'digestion friendly' for folks like me?
Thanks and happy new year!
AnswerHi Terry
I have to admit that I have a bit of trouble with fatty meats as well! But I can't really tell you that you should start drinking wine--I am a big believer in having people drink what they like, and moderation in all things. That said, if you enjoy mixed drinks you might prefer wines that a just a little sweet...something like a German Riesling might fit the bill. ANd where there are no wines that are really like beer (which usually has a slight bitterness to it) you could try a lighter style sparkling wine like Prosecco. If it is the bitterness that appeals to you, then a tannin red wine will have a bit of that character as well.
Your best bet is to make friends with a local wine shop or restaurant, and taste through a bunch of wines to find the ones you like. The world of wine flavor is much more varied than beer, and there should probably be something there you will enjoy!
