Question
We have an unopened bottle of J&F Martell *** very old pale Cognac - product of
France. It was brought to Canada from China prior to WW II - Dodwell & Co. Ltd.
Sales Agents, Hong Kong & South China. Would it still be good and safe to
drink? Is it valuable? Thanks so much for your help. Leah

Answer
Hi Leah

If it is unopened, then it is just as safe now as when it was bottled.  Cognac has such a high alcohol level that it doesn't change in the bottle.  But the also means that it doesn't get any better--and doesn't gain much in value.  I would estimate this bottle as about $50.  Bear in mind that it is illegal for private individuals to sell alcohol in the USA.

You might get more value from a bottle collector.  Check out antiquebottles.com for a glimpse into that world.  But I only know about beverages, not bottles.

If it were mine, I would open it on a special occasion with family and friend, and think of all that has happened since this Cognac was put into the bottle.

Sorry I don't have more exciting news for you.
