Beverages - Cranberry Juice

Expert: Paul Wagner - 7/31/2004

Question
Is it possible to become ill after drinking cranberry juice, if it has sat out too long. Or gets cold than warm, cold?

Answer
Dear Smoh:

All juice is a combination of sugar, water, acid, and other elements.  The sugar can start to ferment, which would produce alcohol.  And I suppose that some kind of mold might grow in the juice--but usually the high acidity, and the fermentation (which would also product carbon dioxide as a by product) would limit this.

If you are concerned, I would check with a doctor--but cranberry juice certainly isn't in the same category as mayonaise or fish,..,.it doesn't go bad that quickly, or with the same kinds of serious results.
