Beverages/White Horse whisky circa 1924-1930
Expert: Paul Wagner - 4/16/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I too have a full unopened bottle of White horse whisky that has an interesting cap. (I have a photo if interested) The cap looks like a bottle cap that's been cured up and an iron rod pushed through it and twisted. All the labels front, back and top are still on it. One label even reads "By Order of HIS Majesty the King." It was found in my's Aunt and Uncle's home in Connecticut (built 1920) after he passed in 2005. They lived in the home for 40 years, but we think it was put and left there by the owner who built the house. Do we need to be concerned about its value or just enjoy the contents.
Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Pat
Well, you know the bottle is at least 50 years old, because Elizabeth II didn't become Queen of England until 1952. But White Horse is not a unique or collectible brand...it's pretty common whiskey. The bottle might have a bit of value to a collector of bottles, but not to a whiskey lover.
Value? I would say that this might bring between $50 and $100 in the right auction...but if it were mine, I would open on a special occasion and enjoy it ( the alcohol in this stuff certainly makes it safe to drink). After all, I was born in 1952, and this bottle is older (and probably in better shape!) than I am!

QUESTION: Thanks Paul. I was born in 1946 so its even older than me. Can you suggest the best venue to "auction" the bottle?
I also have some Picasso prints and two water color painting. Could you put in contact with some who could tell me about them. Like the bottle I have photos. Take care and again "Thank you".

AnswerHi Pat:
This is the best site I know for bottle collectors:
http://www.antiquebottles.com/
You could also try ebay--but bear in mind that ebay will not allow you to sell alcoholic beverages. You have to state that the item for sale is not for consumption, and is only being sold for display/collectible purposes.
I don't know much about the art market--although I, too, have a Picasso etching in my office. I would start by asking that question of an allexperts art expert...or a place like Sotheby's which specializes in art auctions.
