Question
Can you recommend a good white wine to go with eggs for someone who really only drinks Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon?

Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Jim:

Yes, but let's get a couple of misconceptions out of the way:

1.  If you like Shiraz and Cabernet, and don't like white wines, then drink what you like with the eggs.  In fact, drink what you like, period.

2.  Eggs don't have much flavor, so it really depends on what you serve with them.  The added ingredients usually have more flavor than the eggs, so match the wine with them.

If you add in some shrimp or crab, then a nice fresh Chardonnay might go well. Eggs Benedict?  I actually like Riesling with that dish...just a little sweet.  And a Denver omelet, with peppers and cheese?  I like Champagne with that.  And if you like your eggs with bacon a blue cheese mixed in, then I would have to recommend a nice Shiraz or Cabernet!
