Question
My father has recently given me a bottle of Fonseca Bin 27 which he says he bought in about 1960.  Can you please give me a hint whether I should a) drink it b) sell it or c)keep it?

Answer
Hi Helen

Bin 27 is not a Vintage Port, but a more serious style of Ruby Port that used to be called Vintage CHaracter. It doesn't age as well as Vintage Ports, and even has a shorter cork.  With that in mind, I would drink this one pretty quickly.  It might still be in fine condition, but it wasn't made to store this long, and I doubt that you would get a collector to pay much money for it.

On the other hand, the sugar and alcohol in the wine should help protect it.  I would serve this one soon, on a special occasion with family or friends.  And I would have a back up bottle on hand, just in case it really is dead.

Sorry to be the bearer of such news.
