AboutMel Expertise Can Dylan solve quadratic equations? What makes up a "mega-burger"? Believe me, if an
answer exists, I probably know it. Whether your question is general, begging the context
of all 10 seasons, or completely inane, feel free to drop me a line either way. I will provide
episode reference numbers for each response, and plan to have some fun with
this. Trivia quizzes often need correction, and publications will get their plotlines/characters/relationships mixed up too. I accept dialogue/scene requests, but please limit your inquiry to 1-2 per question. Note: I will not know the names of any replacement songs used on the DVDs or on YouTube, only those from the original broadcast episodes. Been a fan since 1990, the very beginning. Don't let show forums warp your brain.
Experience Well, I began watching "Beverly Hills, 90210" at the tender age of 9 and a half, during its original run. By 11, I was a huge fan; 13, obsessed; 14, growing bitter. I don't like the later seasons as much. But, technically, I still watch all of them in some way. Do this for 19-plus years and you'll remember the darndest things. Education/Credentials I'd like to say I've earned a "degree" on the life and times of the original eight, with specific concentration on Seasons 1 thru 5, any Jack McKay drama, Dylan/Kelly together or apart, and the guest stars of 1992-1994. Season 4, I think, was the best and strikingly different from any other. My only real weakness might be later-season 'stand-in' characters like Matt and Noah, and the ever-changing ownerships of The AfterDark.

Question Hi Mel! I need your opinion on something. I'm a huge Brenda/Dylan fan but I also like Kelly/Dylan, am I normal? For example I like the episodes "Sex, Lies and Volleyball" from season 3 and "Windstruck" from season 4! I also like their first date, up until they run into Brenda and I like when they're eating strawberries at Dylan's in the senior prom episode. Is it ok to like both couples? I also like their kiss at the end of "The Real McCoy" I feel so guilty because I feel like I'm betraying or backstabbing Brenda/Dylan. I even find myself thinking about them now and then. I even like some of their moments from season 9 and 10 and think they should've just dated. Is there something wrong with me? Am I the first one to like both couples? Please help. Thank you.
Answer Hi Marissa,
Yes, you are 100% normal. All of the major relationships on the show between main characters were painstakingly developed to be taken seriously by fans, and ultimately loved. Thus, they each have merit and were promoted positively during the show's run, usually in step with whatever couple was paired up on screen at the time. As an original viewer, I can assure you that there were no massive hate campaigns against Brenda/Dylan or Dylan/Kelly. But even if there were, does it really matter? First and foremost, 90210 was written as a series about friends that would always be there for each other. Many people multi-shipped within the over-arching Brenda/Dylan/Kelly and Brandon/Kelly/Dylan triangles, and that's part of what allowed producers such flexibility. I know that forums/message boards for the show can be filled with drama and very devicive in nature, but that has more to do with cyber-social politics than anything related to these characters. You don't have to pick a "team". There are no real betrayals to be had here (except maybe between fan groups). Most casual (or should I say, more inclusive) fans would be turned off by such an environment, so you're not getting the real picture. I believe that most fans simply love the show and embrace "conflicting" couples at their leisure, in whichever way suits their purposes as a viewer. Just consider, also, how much more enjoyable a show is when you freely support a full range of couples. That is always the writer/producer's intention, anyway. And yes, I've met several B/D-K/D fans.
