Bible Studies/Levite's

Question
The bibles talks a lot about Levite's and their role's and I was wondering: who are the Levite's of today? What do we call people that have the same role as the Levite's had back then?

Answer
Hi Daya,

With the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 AD and the onset of the Diaspora (the exile of Jews throughout the world that followed) most Jews lost knowledge of their ancestral tribe. According to the Christian prophecies, during the final seven years of the age 144,000 Jews will be called to serve God, 12,000 from each tribe, so it seems certain that this knowledge will one day be restored.

Those accepted as Levites continue to play special roles in Jewish life. Many become rabbis, are called upon for the ceremonial Torah readings and so on.

For now, certain Jewish last names, such Levits, Kats, Katz, Levi, Levin, Lewicki, Loewy, Kohanim, Cohen and so on are indicative that one is a Levite. The role of Levite is determined by ancestry from Aaron rather than adopted service.

Hope this helps,
