Question
The prophet came and prophesied over the altar making King Jeroboam angry.  His arm became paralyzed and he asks the prophet to heal it; which he did.  The king then invited the prophet to the palace for drink and food; the prophet declined because the Lord had commanded him not to eat or drink there and to go home a different road.  The old prophet heard the account and went to talk with him and invited him to eat and drink and the young prophet declined again.  The prophet deceived him and told him an angel had said it was okay for him to eat and drink and the prophet swallowed the old prophets lies...why????  Then the same old prophet told the young prophet that he would die because he had disobeyed the Lord...did this prophet speak out of both sides of his mouth?  One time lie then the next time truth???  Why was God so harsh and caused the prophet to die for being deceived....Will God strike us dead if we are deceived?

Answer
He was not struck down for being lied to, he was struck down for not following God's commandments or instructions.

We can be struck down if we do not follow instructions:
Luke 24:44-53  And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Just as the disciples were told to go to Jerusalem, if they had not gone there and had listened to the lies about Jesus, then their souls were in danger.
