QUESTION: I have been seeing a wonderful man for 4 years and he was born again about 4 months ago. He feels that second marriages are wrong in God's eyes and says he does not think we should ever marry. I do not believe this at all. I believe that God wants people to love each other and be happy. Could you please elaborate on this subject and show me some scripture that says this is ok. He does not want me out of his life but says we can never marry. He has been down on his luck and thinks he needs to get everything out of his life that is not perfect in God's eyes. I have tried to explain to him that we are not perfect creatures and have to repent every day of our sin. Please help me on this matter. Thank  you in advance.

ANSWER: Dear Barbara,

God divorced Israel several times in the Old Testament for unfaithfulness.

When a person is divorced then they are free from their previous marriage.

Jesus does not want us to be flippant or trivial towards our marriages but sometimes divorce happens and there is no chance of reconciling.

Under such situations and more especially when one of the partners has re married then divorce is really divorce, meaning you are free from that marriage. (Of course there are too many trivial divorces today, not acceptable to God)

Divorce means the marriage is broken and the two people are free to re marry.

Their needs are still the same and they have still got the same desires and need these to be fulfilled. So let every man have his wife and every women her husband. This is God's stand.

So if you want scriptures for these reasons I can let you have them but God is love and wants love in the home for every family.

Give me a little time and i will send it to you, bit busy right now but do a search on God and divorce in the OT and see also 1 Cor 7, 11 for now.

These scriptures show us that God accepts divorce. People who separate should try to reconcile but there comes a point when it cant be done and then divorce is necessary. God accepts divorce but hates it and prefers a resolution.


Jeremiah 3:8
I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.

Matthew 5:32
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

1 Corinthians 7 & 11 show us that divorce is a reality
