Question
In Luke 23:39-43, we see that two criminals hanging beside Jesus talking to each other and to the Lord.  I understand that all three were experiencing some excruciating pain and I am wondering how it could be possible for someone to speak in such pain.

Answer
Remember Jesus was the only one in "REAL" pain the others either had a piercing sensation in their wrists and their feet or possibly tied at the arms and wrist but not nailed.

The cross was a suffocation from pressure on you chest with which the feet were used to relieve the pressure but you would get tired of standing for long periods of time and hang there. Hence you will find that the soldiers came to "break their legs" Except Jesus who was already dead due to "blood and water flowed". Science will tell you that the sign of water in the  is the sign that determines that they were dead. Unlike the thieves Jesus was beat profusely. So overall it portrays a better picture of how Christ, even though He was in sooo much pain, He still reached out "save those which were lost."
