Question
I've come accross many people say that Old Testament was done away with when Jesus died on the cross and when He went up to Heaven. Would you please give me some specific details/evidences/proof in the Bible and as well as your suggestion how I would tell people who argue that OT was done away with. Please Help me!
Thankyou!

AnswerHi Jackson,
Thank you for contacting me about your question regarding the role of the Old Testament. People that state that the Old Testament was done away with are ignorant about the bible. Jesus came to fulfill the law, but not to do away with it. And, in the course of time, He did fulfill it. But He also said that not one jot or tittle would depart from the law. There are many, many important teachings contained in the Old Testament that are still applicable today. For instance, the Ten Commandments, among others.
What was done away with was the means of atonement, that is, the means God required to wash away sins. Before Jesus rose from the dead, people had to follow the sacrificial system found in the Old Testament, to have their sins forgiven. But after the resurrection, people had to put their trust in Jesus Christ to have their sins forgiven. This, and show they are serious by working on eradicating sin in their lives, which God helps us with when we really mean business.
So then, the means of salvation (atonement for the Jew) is now by accepting Jesus Christ as your savior and growing in spiritual maturity in the knowledge and love of God and Christ Jesus. This applies to everyone. No matter whether you're a Jew or a Gentile, salvation is in no other name, than the name of Jesus Christ. And for Jews who state there is nothing in the Old Testament teaching that God would enact a New Testament, have them look at Jeremiah 31:31-34. There it gives a teaching regarding what God will do in the distant future regarding making a CHANGE to the law regarding what He expects of us, what we can expect from Him, and its affect on the believer.
But having said that, there is much in the Old Testament that still applies, such as the moral laws and such.
I hope this whets your appetite to study this matter further, Jackson. If you have any further questions, please get back to me and we'll discuss them.
