Bible Studies/OT Promises Still Good Today?

Question
Hello there, I have noticed that many churches rest heavily on OT promises, however when read in context these promises appear to be applicable only to those whom God is referring to, however NT Christians "claim" many promises form the OT that at least appear to apply to a specific group of persons.  My question is - are OT promises that we claim today intend for us, or were they specific to that time, and the people that God makes reference to in context?

Answer
Hi Jay,
This is one of those areas where knowledgeable, devout Christians disagree.

I will share my views on this important question but understand that there is no "right answer" accepted all.

I believe the Tanach, the Hebrew Scriptures that we call the "Old Testament" was given to the Jews. There is a LOT we can learn from it, it is indeed our "schoolmaster" (Gal 3:24). In the Tanach there are promises exclusively to the Jews and others for everyone who believes. Paul says, (Romans 11:1) I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

Chapter eleven of Romans goes into a fair amount of detail about this.

The context of the individual verses/promises will make it clear which ones belong just to Jews and which to all who believe.

Again, denominations, teachers and individual Believers differ on this one.

Hope this helps,
