Answer
Hi Josh and Steve,

Everything matters when it comes to Bible study ;-)

Rod: Shebet (shay'-bet);
Word Origin: Hebrew, Noun Masculine
from an unused root probably meaning to branch off  rod, staff, branch, offshoot, club, sceptre, tribe
rod, staff
shaft (of spear, dart)
club (of shepherd's implement)
truncheon, sceptre (mark of authority)
clan, tribe

Staff: Mish`enah (mish-ay-naw');
Word Origin: Hebrew, Noun Feminine
from (04937)

support (of every kind), staff

Now, one could do much with this.

The "rod" is masculine, showing power, authority and force

God's POWER and Authority protects us.

The "staff" is feminine, showing wisdom and leadership.

God guides us when we are willing to follow Him.

So, if we submit to God's guidance He will give us authority and lead and defend us so that we can do His will.

That's how I would take these at least.

Hope this helps,

~ Pastor John
