Question
I understand my obligation as a watchmen. I agree with most teaching on the importance of evangelism. However i was asked a question by a fellow student at the college i attend. He asked me what the consequences of not evangelizing are? I know the terminology such as "their blood will be on your hands", but what does that mean. If i don't take advantage of an opportunity to witness do i risk my own salvation?

Answer
Dear Brady

You have used, in your question, two words that are often taken to be synonymous, bit that are totally different.  These are the words “evangelism” and “witness”.

In New Testament terms, the evangelist is one who is specifically gifted by God for a particular task – that of evangelism.  However, as Paul makes clear in Eph.4: 11, it is “some” who are called to this distinct ministry.   This was, for example, a ministry to which Timothy appears to have been called (II Tim.4:5).

However, every follower of the Lord Jesus IS a witness.  This was the commission given to every disciple when it was given to the eleven (Acts 1:8).  I may be a good witness; I may be a bad witness; but I AM a witness!!  My life is the only gospel message that some may ever see – and my actions really do speak more loudly than my words!! (cf  Matt.21:28ff)

Where does the “Watchman” fit into all of this?  May I suggest that the work of a watchman – both in OT and NT terms – is that of sharing the gospel message of repentance and the remission of sins with as many as possible, and of providing faith-enhancing instructions for those who turn to God.  This is a work to which all may apply themselves, even although some (e.g. a full-time pastor) will have more opportunities than others.  The important thing, in this respect is for each of us always to be prepared to give an answer to those who would ask questions about our faith (I Pet.3:15)

The final point is that I believe that if a person is truly saved, then that person cannot be plucked from the Saviour’s grip (cf Jn.17:12, 18:9).

I trust that the above will have been of some assistance to you.

Blessings

I am happy to offer answers to anyone with a question that refers to the Christian Faith in its widest possible sense. I believe that the Bible is the living Word of God, and seek to base all of my life on its teaching. I also have some knowledge of some of the cults, and of Islam and Judaism. Of course, my answers are just one man's thoughts, and I would always advise a questioner to check with others, and with the Word of God.
