Question
I understand that there was a minority group within this church that withstood against paul.Paul on many occasions tells them to repent of their sins. Were these christians living in sin or unbelievers who have yet to repent and become christians?

Answer
Scholars believe that the opponents of Paul in Corinth were Christians who had strayed from the traditional teachings that Paul had taught.  These people were probably influenced by other Christians who arrived in Corinth after the visit by Paul.
