Question
Why does the catholics believes "one's sins must be forgiving through a priest?" Didn't Jesus did for us so we can have access to go to God on our own? Isn't Jesus our intercessor between mankind and God? If I am giving the opportunity to get a million dollars directly from the President of the USA, why would I try to go through the secretary of state? This to me is the same as in the case of asking for forgiveness. Jesus gave us direct access to him and his father. There is no reason to have someone else go on our behalf.

Catholicism is based on tradition as well as the Bible (they are considered equally binding).
John 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you [they read: the authorized Church: the Papacy].
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23 Whose soever sins ye remit [as priests], they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
The Papacy claims that they alone are the inheritors of this promise, that the authority to forgive sins was given to them as Peter's successors.
This was one of the doctrines that lead to the Protestant Reformation. I disagree with the Church on this.
