Bible Studies/Creation

QuestionI have been a believer all of my life, and I used to be a really devout Christian. Recently (over the past year and half or so) it started to conflict with my beliefs in science (the world being 4 billion years old and not created in 6 days) and also my father being a stubborn I guess you'd say fundamentalist who believes the earth is only 12,000 years old and waws created in such a short span of time.
Recently I've wanted to come back to my life to God, yet I didn't want to give up my scientific beliefs which, as an intellectual, do mean a lot to me. I've heard that the bible can back up science in every aspect. Also in discussions with one of my teacher's last year who had a degree in bible history said that in the original language it was written in, Genesis chapter 1 (the creation) did not actually give reference to six days, but a word meaning six ages or six periods of time.
Seeing as how you study the bible in Hebrew and in Greek, I wanted to ask, is this true? I've done research on this myself but haven't found an answer saying either way.
Thank you for taking time to answer my question. Any information you can provide will be a help to me.
