Question
What is meant by a mystery religion of Babylon that would change time and law in Revelations? Who does this and why?

Answer
Hi Patricia,

In Revelation 17, John prophesies about a Woman on a Beast. On her forehead is written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth.

While there are various views as to the proper interpretation of this prophetic vision, I think the following explanation is preferred, in light of other Scriptural passages. The beast is the revived Roman empire in its character as the center of world government. The woman represents ecclesiastical power as distinct from the political power of the beast. She is both supported by the beast, and also plays a dominant role in politics.

The Woman represents the system of false religion that began at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11), which was the area that developed into Babylon, and was the seat of many influential false religions whose impact can be seen and felt even to this day.

The book of Revelation is a deep and interesting book, and it is worthwhile spending the time to study it. Due to the controversy over interpretation and the importance of remaining true to Scripture and God's intent, may I recommend that you get a good commentary on the subject. My recommendation would be THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST, by John Walvoord, published by Moody Press.

If I can help you further, feel free to write back.

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
