QuestionPlease explain the meaning of the visions that Ezekiel saw in chapter 1 of the book of Ezekiel
AnswerHi Carolynne,
Thank-you for your question.
This is an immensely complex portion of Scripture and notoriously difficult to understand. I’ll do my best to explain what I believe are a few of the things this chapter is speaking of.
Because we hardly have a framework in which to interpret this vision or more than a remote idea of the historical context in which it was given many hesitate to offer suggestions as to its meaning. And many of the suggestions that have been offered often appear to be rather wild and random assignations of meaning.
Some noted theologians, however, believe this vision is a demonstration of God’s Providence; showing the rebellious Israelites, of that time, how He sovereignly and gloriously controls all things. The wheels represent aspects of God’s Providence in that it is unchanging and constant. The eyes may draw attention to God’s omniscience – He is all-seeing and all-knowing. The height of the wheels is a reminder of His greatness, might, and glory. Some think the wheels traversing each other in such a way that they were facing in four different directions just like the living creatures, further demonstrating the all-encompassing nature of God’s Providence.
The vision shows God’s glory and power that man may fear and repent. The living creatures – or cherubim – Ezekiel saw in his vision are constantly employed in the dutiful carrying out of God’s will. His providence is thus shown to be governing all things - as His messengers are constantly and unswervingly doing His will, This gives us a small glimpse of how God’s will is perhaps done in heaven (“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”).
You can read John Calvin’s commentary online here:

Thanks again for your question, Carolynne. I hope you find this helpful.
God bless!
