Question
Hello, how did the Iraelite generation come to dwell in Egypt.? and how did they get there?

Answer
Hi,

Its sort of a long story but in a nutshell Joseph was sold into slavery to a band of Ishmaelites (Arabs) by his brothers. They sent him to Egypt as a slave. Because God was with him however Joseph went from being a slave to being second in command in Egypt (due in part to his visions and wisdom).

The God of Israel revealed to Joseph that a major drought was going to hit the entire Middle East and so he ordered the Egyptians to place their food into barns and to immediately begin rationing. Once the drought hit this meant that only the Egyptians had stores of food and so people went there looking for food.

Because of the drought Joseph's brothers (excluding the youngest) went to Egypt to trade for food. Through a series of events they returned to their father but later returned with all the Israelites as honored guests of Joseph.

The Israelites lived in the Land of Goshen in Egypt and thrived for a time.

Eventually the Pharaoh Joseph served died, as did Joseph and their their families. The new Pharaoh was antisemitic and enslaved the Israelites and abused them terribly. God called for Moshe (Moses) and Aaron and this led to the Exodus (the first Pesach or Passover, the parting of the Red Sea etc).

These events are recorded from around Genesis 37:1 to the end of that book and on into the book of Exodus.

Hope this helps,
