Question
I heard a beautiful worship song in my native language which I want to use in a service.  The songwriter claims that the heaven of heavens, the sky, the wind, ocean, birds & animals praise the Lord.  Can you tell me if there is any verse in the bible which supports this claim (I cannot find out who the songwriter is to check)?

Answer
Hello Lenin

Thank you for your question.  Strictly speaking, it is outwith the area of Biblical studies, but I will endeavour to assist you.

The first verse that comes to mind is Ps.19:1 - "The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork." (RSV)  That, I would suggest, certainly covers the heavens, the sky, the wind, and the ocean.

The whole of the 150th Psalm would be my next "port of call".  Here, all of creation is exhorted to praise YHWH, with the final command being "Let everything that breathes praise YHWH!  Praise YHWH!" (RSV).  Such an injunction would cover birds and animals, as well as humanity itself.

In the New Testament, I would refer to Rom.8:19ff.  Although Paul does not make explicit mention of creation praising its Creator, he does seem to suggest that it will be set free from bondage - surely a cause of rejoicing!

This is all that immediately comes to mind.  I trust that it will have been of some help.

Expertise

I am happy to offer answers to anyone with a question that refers to the Christian Faith in its widest possible sense. I believe that the Bible is the living Word of God, and seek to base all of my life on its teaching. I also have some knowledge of some of the cults, and of Islam and Judaism. Of course, my answers are just one man's thoughts, and I would always advise a questioner to check with others, and with the Word of God.

Experience

Served as a full-time parish minister in Scotland for about six years, and then spent the last thirty as a teacher (now 'retired') of Religious Education in Secondary Comprehensive schools (ages 11-17) while continuing my own preaching and teaching ministry. I also believe that learning is a life-time process, and have recently completed a Master's degree in Divinity.
