Bible Studies/Circumcision

Question
Scott, I was searching the web for information on circumcision and found your response to Andrew on 8/1/2005

His Question was...
Today in church the pastor mentioned about how Timothy was circumcised to not cause his Jewish brothers to stumble as he ministers to them. This lead me to think about Acts 15 mentioning that physical circumcision is no longer necessary, but circumcision by the spirit is required for salvation. I then thought back to the origin of circumcision as Abraham's covenant with God. My question is a little embarassing for me to ask, but I wanted to know what is the significance between how
the uncircumcized and circumcized are physically different. What differences occur in sexual and nonsexual operation? How is this a metaphor of salvation through Christ (with circumcision
spiritually instead of physically). And if you have any ideas, what might all this teach us about the character of God and his plan?

I know it has been over five years but your response back in 2005 has been a help to me today on 2011.  What is funny is that my name is also Andrew. Interesting isn't it.:o).  Anyway I noted that you offered the other Andrew the option to go more in-depth concerning this topic.  I am very interested to learn what else you would have added. Or if there are any books or websites you might recommend for research.  I am not lazy and I don't mind hunting for my own meat, I'm not yet a skilled tracker if you know what I mean.

I just know there is something I am missing in my understanding.  But I don't know what I don't know so I am helpless to ask what specific lack of knowledge has me feeling restless concerning this topic.

I will be happy to answer questions you may have that might help you to help me. I should go ahead and say that I have received God's free gift of salvation by placing my complete trust in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross, i.e. since you said you ask that of most who write to you.

Thanks
Andrew

Answer
Hello Andrew,

I'm glad you took the time to write.

It's great to see your zeal for the Scriptures. There is so much to learn, and God always rewards those who seek out His truth.

I vaguely recall the discussion you mentioned from 2005. I would be happy to dig a little deeper with you. Can you help me to do that by telling me specifically what you're looking to better understand? If you can put your thoughts into specific questions, that would help.

Scott

P.S. Thanks for sharing with me that you are a Believer. I like to know things like that because 1) It affects one's spiritual perspective and ability to fully grasp God's truth; and 2) It really is the most important thing.

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
