Question
HOW IS CHRISTIAN DATING HANDLED FROM A BIBLICAL POINT OF VIEW?

Answer
Hi, BK!

You ask an interesting and very timely question.

God gives us many principles in the Bible that we can apply to something that is somewhat unique to our time and culture--the practice of dating. These principles deal with purity, proper treatment and respect for one another, the importance of marriage, etc.

Joshua Harris wrote a book called, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, in which he applies Biblical principles to this concept. See his web site for more information: http://www.joshharris.com/ikdg/ikdgmain.htm

One idea that I think Christians need to consider is that dating implies ownership, control, or "belonging." When two people date, they begin to think and act as if they "belong" to each other, even though they are not married or even engaged.

This can be dangerous, and can lead to false expectations, jealousy, inappropriate demands (cannot see other people), and even sexual impurity.

It's much healthier when guys and girls can get to know each other, build friendships, develop those friendships, see other people, and forget the "dating" mindset that's so prevalent in our society ... before making a commitment to another person. And we should definitely invite God into the process and into our relationships, trusting Him to guide us to the right person, and to make us the right person for that person.

Why do you ask? Can I help further?

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
