Question
Hello,

Ephesians 5:4 "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks."

I have a question about this verse.   What is meant by foolish talking or "jesting"?   To what degree do our jokes become "foolish talking" or "jesting".

Sometimes I like to joke around with a bit of sarcasm just to be funny or to let off some steam.  However, it does not contain anything sinful or filthy.

Thanks Scott!

Answer
Hi, Friend! It's nice to hear from you.

You ask a good question. Is this verse saying that it's wrong to joke around? I don't think so.

First, look at the context. Paul starts the chapter by encouraging the Ephesians to love each other--a truly Godly trait and one which sets us apart from the world (vv. 1-2). Beginning in verse 3, he warns against the self-centered vices which are characteristics of the world.

In verse 4, he zeroes in on improper speech--obsenity (shameless talk and conduct), foolish talk (literally, "stupid words"), and (coarse) jesting (vulgar, frivolous wit). This implies the type of joking that puts down others or that is crude and inappropriate.

It is clear from the Bible that joy is encouraged. Indeed, it is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Being joyful and happy, wearing a smile and having (real) fun, being able to laugh and joke--these can be signs of a Spirit-filled life, so long as we abide by the guidelines of Philippians 4:8.

I hope this helps. Feel free to write back.

Scott
