Does the scripture address the requirement for women's head coverings in church, and if so, does it apply today?

Dear Cleatus,

Thank you for your question about women’s head coverings.

The only text that comes to mind is:

1 Cor 11:13  Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
1 Cor 11:14  Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
1 Cor 11:15  but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
1 Cor 11:16  If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice--nor do the churches of God.

Paul here is talking about covering a woman’s hair while praying. There is no indication whether or not this was a custom of the times or if it should be a rule for all time to come. It would appear to me that, in view of the historical time in which Paul lived—and the Jewish influence which pervaded every church—it referred to a custom of the times.

I suggest that you study the Scriptures for yourself, praying that God will guide you in understanding this question—and many more. He will reveal it to you as well as to me.
