Bible Studies/Jesus, fear
Expert: Paul Walker - 9/12/2007
QuestionI have been thinking and can't figure this out because I believe the Bible is silent on it. When Jesus was so anxious about his impending doom that he sweat great drops of blood, what did he say to himself? We are instructed to rely on the scripture directly or Biblical principles to guide us and I am wondering what thoughts or principles Jesus took comfort in during this awful time for him...or did he just suffer? I find it hard to believe he just suffered with anxiety because that would have been doing nothing and I can't see Jesus just sitting there rocking back and forth in fear and letting it paralyze him. Thank you.
AnswerI do not believe there is any mystery if you take all the accounts given together; Matt 26, Mark 14 as well as Luke 14. No, he was not just sitting there paralyze with fear. He had come into the world for this reason.
John 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but FOR THIS CAUSE CAME I UNTO THIS HOUR.
He knew from whence he came and where he was going.
John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should DEPART OUT OF THIS WORLD UNTO THE FATHER, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
Yea, the flesh was in anguish, but it was thy will be done, not mine. Read the accounts given together and see if you do not get a better understanding of the moment.
We should likewise be ready to trust in God and deny ourselves, Christianity can be summed up in three words; SERVICE SACRIFICE SUFFERING.
Philippians 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also TO SUFFER FOR HIS SAKE;
I hope this helps.
