Question
In the bible it is stated, I quote "God made the heavens and the earth..." How could he have said that phrase if the earth didn't get it's name until 1000 years ago? Unless the bible was written 1000 years after Jesus. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Jesus was about 2000 years ago?

NASA: All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman gods and godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground. It comes from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. In German it is 'erde'. The name Earth is at least 1000 years old.

Hi Jamie,
The word "earth" in the version of the Bible where you found it is a translation of a Hebrew word for "earth" that is far older than the English language by thousands of years. Humans have had words for "earth" since there have been humans. The Bible was not originally written in English but rather in Hebrew, Aramaic, and later in Greek. It was from those early languages that it was translated first into Latin and then into English. So, the writer of Genesis did not use the English word "earth," he used the Hebrew word that was not translated into English until the English word "earth" came into existance. Also, in the early Greek language, there were five different words that could be translated as "earth" or "world" and each one meant something a little different. For example, one literally meant the ground. Another meant all the people on earth, and another meant the entire earth, water and all. I hope that this is clear to you. My education puts me second to none in this area and I have had over forty years experience in the area of teaching Christian theology, doctrine, apologetics, hermeneutics, history, and philosophy. I belong to no officially recognized organizations. I'm simply a person with a deep and lifelong desire to know the truth, a desire so strong that I have, for more than 50 years, poured myself and a lot of money into finding it and making sure of it. It's quite obvious that the Bible is not easy to comprehend thus all the divided opinions about what it teaches. I am finalizing a short treatise on the Bible that I believe will help a lot of people who seriously want to get a clear understanding of what the Bible actually has to say to everyone, a treatise that should take the mystery out of it and show that it really makes sense. People deserve help in recognizing the truth about what the Bible says because there is so much false teaching about it that is actually leading people away from God instead of to God.
