Question
Why was Jesus flogged before he was crucified?

Flogging was one of the things required by Jewish law for those who were charged with blasphemy and other serious crimes against God. By respecting Jewish laws when possible, Pilot would continue to be respected by most of the Jewish leaders who would therefore be less likely to resist his authority. Also, when Rome conquered a country, the conquered people were no longer allowed to administer, among other things, capital punishment. That particular form of punishment was to be left to the Roman authorities.
Remember, Palestine was a conquered territory and most Jews were resentful because, as far as they were concerned, no idol worshiping gentile had any right to rule over the people of the most high God or to occupy their land.

Additionally, the reason Jesus was crucified by the Roman authorities was that Pilot needed to do whatever he could to keep peace with the Jews, who were at the point of riot, or possibly lose his job and possibly his own head. Ceasar did not look kindly on his appointed governors who failed to do their job well. Uprisings among conquered people was costly to Rome and tended to make the Emporer look bad or at least incompetent in the eyes of other members of the government, some of whom would envy having his position and all the privileges that accompanied it.

My education puts me second to none in this area and I have had over forty years experience in the area of teaching Christian theology, doctrine, apologetics, hermeneutics, history, and philosophy. I belong to no officially recognized organizations. It's quite obvious that the Bible is not easy to comprehend thus all the divided opinions about what it teaches. I am finalizing a short treatise on the Bible that I believe will help a lot of people who seriously want to get a clear understanding of what the Bible actually has to say to everyone, a treatise that should take the mystery out of it and show that it really makes sense. People deserve help in recognizing the truth about what the Bible says because there is so much false teaching about it that is actually leading people away from God instead of to God.
