Bible Studies/OT theme of sin

Question
I'm trying to find out how the theme of sin in the OT develops.  I know in the early part of the OT (the Torah) there is a pattern of sin - punishment - God's mercy - repeat of sin.  I was wondering if this continues throughout the rest of the OT or if there is some change in the way the OT handled the theme of sin.

Answer
Hi, Lucie.

The theme of sin in the Old Testament develops the same way it does in the first several books, as well as throughout history.

Unfortunately, we as human beings are, by nature, sinful, and we continue to repeat our sinful habits, generation after generation. The account of sin is consistent, because mankind's habit of sin is consistent. We sin, realize God's punishment, embrace God's mercy, and then turn around and sin again. Isn't it that way in each of our lives?

One thing that has been proven by every generation, as well as by every single living being, is that we all sin. Repeatedly, and without cure. (See Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:10, 3:23.) Despite God's mercy and grace, we still revert to our old ways, like a dog returning to its vomit (Proverbs 26:11). (Sorry for the descriptive language!)

Our only hope is to find a permanent solution to the sin issue--not necessarily something that will keep us from sinning. No one reaches perfection on this side of the grave. Rather, that solution should be the eradication of the condemnation that sin brings (Romans 6:23). That sin issue can be dealt with only through Jesus Christ's perfect sacrifice (John 1:12, 3:16, 14:6, Romans 6:23). To receive the free gift of forgiveness and salvation requires only that we trust Jesus and call on His name (Romans 10:9-10,13, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5).

Have you done this?

I'm not sure if I answered your question, Lucie, but let me know if you'd like to talk further.

Happy to help.

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
