Bible Studies/Proverbs 31:5-9

Question
Hello Eric,
This may be a silly question, but I am teaching a bible study for the first time and we looked at Proverbs 31 last week, and we got to verses 5-9, and I was wondering if you could tell me what you think we are supposed to take from those verses?
I would appreciate as quick of a reply as possible because I have my Bible study within the next hour. Thanks.

Hi Laura,

I love your name! Laura is one of my favorite girl names. I've always liked it.

About your question. Sorry I couldn't get to it sooner, but I worked today and am now just getting to answering my email.

As a casual drinker myself, I would say that those verses speak of leaders not to be drunk. Leaders, as well as the masses, need to drink in moderation, to know their limits, and not cross them! The bible does not condemn drinking, but it does condemn drunkenness. Being out of control, whether it is through alcohol, drugs, or whathaveyou, is a sin. Even Jesus drank alcoholic beverages, and of course, so did the apostle Paul on occasion. Again, drinking is not the sin, but sinning due to your lack of control, is. So, the lesson here in Proverbs 31:5-9 is to learn self-control, and not to overstep those boundries each of us know we have.

Alcohol can be a blessing or a curse, and it all depends on how you use it. Like money, alcohol is a tool for good or for evil. Like most things in life, its how you USE the tools you're given that determines whether it is sin or not-sin.

I hope this helps, Laura.

Hello to you! I love discussing many doctrinal subjects regarding God`s rationale for creating us like he did and our value to him. Also, I enjoy discussing things from the Atheist`s perspective too. I take the view that the Bible is not inerrant, that it has errors which are easy to prove, but I also believe that much in the Bible is God`s Word to humanity.

Experience

I have spent over 30 years studying the Bible and related materials. Though I am a layman, I feel confident about my knowledge of the scriptures and welcome all points of view and will treat you with the respect you deserve.
