Question
salvation by faith alone. why then repent? does this doctrine faith alone trumph all other doctrines? john the baptist preached about repentance. luke 13:3

Answer
Nice to hear from you.

Repentance and faith go hand in hand. Repentance is the realization that one's sins have offended a holy God and have alienated that person from God. It carries with it a genuine grief and sorrow for sin, and a genuine desire to turn from sin and honor God.

Faith is realizing that one cannot save himself but must rely fully on God to save him. It is trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross to satisfy God's righteous judgment.

You may be thinking that repentance involves going on to live (or attempt to live) a sinless life, and that, apart from such sinless perfection, there is no true repentance. If so, you may look at repentance as a work, an effort, something one does to earn salvation apart from faith.

No. Again, repentance is not works or the expectation that one will succeed in never sinning again. It is merely a recognition of the extreme seriousness of one's sin, and it's what prompts one to turn in faith to Jesus Christ.

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
