Question
I know this might be a trite question, but why is it a sin to tempt God? Why does God get offended by it?

Because sin is from the opposite kingdom to holiness. They are opposites and so to comitt sin is to offend the Lord. Tempt or test are used interchangeably.
Because knowing it is against God and then to comit something against his will is an offence to Him.
