What is unleaven bread? What is the meaning of unleaven?
Dear Brandi,
Leaven is the older English word meaning "yeast." "Unleavened" means "made without yeast." Yeast is the biological organism (actually a member of the fungi group) used in baking to make the dough rise. Unleavened bread was bread made without the use of leaven. In the Bible, yeast, or leaven, often symbolizes sin, a substance foreign to the human condition as God made it.
