Question
Scott,

Does the command to not be unequally yoked found in 2 Corinthians 6:14 apply to a business partnership where one is Christian and the other is not?

Thanks

Answer
Hi, Mark! Thanks for the question.

In this passage, Paul warns against unequal yokes. While the context likely refers to ecclesiastical separation (separation from those who reject God's truth), many agree that the principle extends to marriage and to business relationships, as well.

In I Corinthians 5:9-10, Paul points out that absolute separation is impossible without actually removing ourselves from the world. We are to be IN the world, but not OF the world. But the principle of avoiding unequal yokes is still vital.

How do we apply this principle? I think it has to do with forming a relationship in which someone else may have some power to affect certain decisions. If a believer marries an unbeliever, he cedes a certain level of control to the spouse. The marriage relationship is (or at least SHOULD be) one in which two people attempt to work together as one, and this involves certain concessions and the willingness, at times, to give in to the other's wishes. You can see how this can create problems when it comes to rearing children, living out your faith, and other major life decisions.

The same principle applies when partnering with an unbeliever in business. A partnership involves joint decision-making and certain concessions. The partner(s) may make decisions that force the believer to do certain things that he would not have otherwise done.

There may be other implications beyond this. But, bottom line, I do believe that this verse applies to business partnerships between believers and unbelievers.

I hope this helps. Feel free to write back if you would like to discuss this further, or any other topic.

Have a great day!

Scott

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
