Question
In many so-called "christian" chain letters that have been spreading recently, I've been bothered by this one phrase: The Lord said, "If you deny me in front of your friends I will deny you in front of my father". Now, I don't believe that spreading such chain letters is an act of faith or meaningful in too many ways, but is that phrase credible? Is there a similar phrase in the Bible, or is it just something somebody made up?

Answer
Hi Sauri,

Yes, this passage is in the Bible:

Matthew 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

If you are receiving chain letters implying that refusing to send the dreaded things on is any way denying God however, not a chance!

People abuse the Bible (and other Scriptures) in so many ways...

I haven't gotten these particular chain letters but if I do I'll delete them like I do all others.

Hope this helps,
~John of AllFaith
