Question
Ed
Of the four Gospel writers, John and Matthew were apostles
and knew Jesus personally, and got thier information first hand. But did Mark and Luke know Jesus personally, and if not where did they get thier information to write a Gospel?
                               thanks
                                Bob

Answer
Mark was a disciple of St. Peter; Luke, of St. Paul.
Actually, each of the gospels contains material that goes back to the time of Jesus Himself together with some material that was put into its present format during the time of the early church [first generation of disciples] and also some theology of each of the gospel writers.
So, the gospels result from three tiers of material.
For a thorough treatment of the formation of the gospels, I recommend Raymond Collins, Introduction to the New Testament [Garden City:Doubleday,1983].  The book should be available through inter-library loan at a local library.
If you would like more from me, please feel free to write again.
Best wishes, Bob.
