Hi Gayila,
To give a thorough answer to this question would probably require a longer answer than you are looking for here. Every verse of the biblical prophecies are intertwined and interrelated. You are invited to post a follow-up if you wish.
As the seven year Tribulation Period wears on, the number of martyrs on the earth will continue to grow. Their deaths will span the entire seven period and are discussed here parenthetically. The military might of the world ruler (the Antichrist) will be waging war on all who refuse his authority. Among these will be innumerable "righteous Gentiles" who refuse 'to bend the knee'.
In verses 9 and 13,14, we see that they are martyrs, hence they are "clothed in white robes". They also wave palm fronds to worship the One seated on the throne. God gives them peace after their diverse trials. Their hungers and other physical hardships are now over.
Verse 17 is the concluding verse of this vision. The Lamb, the Messiah, the Shiloh will henceforth care for them. These people will sit out the rest of the seven year period as victors.
