Question
Dean, thankyou for taking my question:

My question is this: in the bible, it states that during the feast of the passover, they would release one of the prisoners from jail. What I would like to know, is HOW did they normally decide who to release. Did they cast lots?   Thank you very much....Pete

Answer
This releasing of a prisoner was a tradition of that time and even mentioned in the Bible other than this instance.

Because of that, we do not have much to go on as to what was "normal".

What we have is an election by the loudest shouts of the crowd that were at the trial of Jesus. The religious leaders seem to have the greatest influence on the crowd to "vote" for the one to be released.

Sorry, I can't help you any further than this. There is just nothing written concerning this tradition under the Pax Romana.
