who in the bible was named Isrel? and why?

Read Genesis 32:22-32. Jacob, the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, was re-named Israel by God. This was done to commemorate the occasion on which he wrestled with a messenger of God--a "man" who could have been God Himself.
