Question
QUESTION: Is polygamy allowed , and if so where is it located in the bible, I have read where it says it is not allowed but it seems to only mean from a womans stand point, and where it is allowed then some when say it is sexist.

ANSWER: Hi Edward,

God does not permit polygamy. When He created Adam and Eve, He set the pattern for marriage--one man and one woman. Other passages confirm this principle, and deviation from it has proven to result in many negative repercussions.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: I have read that it is not allowed and in the same bible that it is or has been accepted, are there circumstances in which this apply.  I was looking through scriptures, and saw verses that said it was forbidden.  that it was allowed, tolerated. and practiced by some in the bible,  how would you then take on a second wife if this is not allowed, concerned follower.

Answer
There are instances in the Bible in which polygamy is practiced--even by some very godly people. No commentary is given as to whether it is right or wrong. However, the Bible makes it clear from other passages that polygamy is wrong, and that it violates God's ideal design for marriage. Therefore, in these instances, God is not giving permission for polygamy. It's just that the Bible does not comment on it on every occasion in which it is mentioned.

Expertise

I have studied the Bible and Bible-related topics since the time I was very young. My education includes a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Bible, and a Master of Divinity degree. I enjoy delving into deep theological issues and always enjoy a healthy debate. But more importantly, I like working with people and helping them to find the answers that they are looking for. And I am convinced that these answers are available in the Bible.

Experience

By the grace and mercy of God, I have been saved, born again, adopted into the family of God. God has given me a love for the Bible, and for Bible-related subjects. In addition, He has blessed me with ongoing training in the Scriptures, from my youth on up. The more I learn about God through His Word, the more I want to share!
