Question
what did Jesus mean when he stated his last word "Father into your hands I commit my Spirit"? (Luke 23:46)

Answer
Hi Angela,

These were Christ's last words or his dying words. I believe it is important to understand the circumstances in which Christ died. Contrary to what many would see as the taking of His life by the Romans, Christ willingly gave His life.

Luke 22:42 records Jesus words: 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

Faced with His own death, in the Garden of Gesthemane, Jesus prayed to His Father asking if there is another way to accomplish His Father's Will. He articulates this in such a way to communicate He is deeply anguished about what lies ahead, but is willing to submit Himself to the Will of the Father.

The verse you cite it Luke 23:46, "Father, into your hands I commit my Spirit"

In my opinion these last words of Jesus are understood in this same context of submission to God His Father. As Jesus gave up His life, He exercised Trust that God would raise Him from the dead. His words confirm that He was acting according to God's Plan and acknowledges His submission to God the Father.

I welcome any follow-up questions you may have and hope that I have accurately this to your satisfaction.
